The CHAYE gallery presents François GAULIER’s monumental sculpture, “A Tribute to Raymond Queneau”, displayed all summer long in the gallery’s Manoir de Roncheville courtyard.

Both in its dimensions and in the materials used to make it, “A Tribute to Raymond Queneau” makes connections to the unique architecture of the courtyard, which in turn breathes life into the sculpture. Its two nested frames act as windows facing the manor, its courtyard, and its brick and black flint facades. As you walk around the sculpture, taking it in at its different angles, you discover the space as a series of unique viewpoints. As if by magic, the object attracts the eye, revealing the poetry of the place.

The architecture-sculpture plays with transparency, as if it were a drawing whose lines were traced by steel. Made up of full and empty parts, the gaze alone is capable of exploring the sculpture’s transparency. Passing through it is easy enough, and yet you are never quite able to grasp it in its entirety. It belongs in this place full of history, but only exists because of the spectator’s gaze.

It is made of steel, a common construction material, in such a way that is reminiscent of the Tudor-style woodwork of country houses in the Auge region ( Normandy). Strict attention to shapes and proportions; the pursuit of stability; verticality; these are some of the terms that apply both to the area’s historical architectural style and the sculpture itself.

The playful movements of the two frames fixed along the sculpture’s central axis invite the spectator to imagine it in all its different configurations, thus allowing many sculptures to be virtually visible at the same time. This mechanism, with its potential for near infinite permutations, is a reference to Raymond Queneau’s “Exercises in Style”, a book in which he tells the same story ninety-nine times in ninety-nine different ways.
